This showcase blurred the lines separating the two entities, inviting visitors to envision a harmonious future where innovation seamlessly integrates with our lives. Against the backdrop of Le Cavallerizze, Milan, Samsung Design presented more than just an exhibition—it’s a profound exploration of the delicate balance between people and the digital. During Milan Design Week 2024, Prada unveiled the latest edition of Prada Frames, titled Being Home. Curated by Formafantasma, this multidisciplinary symposium explored the evolving relationship between the natural environment and design. Being Home reflected on the private sphere as more than just a space of comfort—it’s a dynamic refuge and an influential force shaping socioeconomic norms.

Since it’s 2009 foundation in a bohemian studio off of Venice and Abbot Kinney, hospitality based Avenue Interior Design has positioned itself as a tiny powerhouse in an industry full of giants. Now based in Downtown Los Angeles, and decidedly less tiny, the team continues to design and collaborate on the industry’s most exciting properties for the most prominent leaders in hospitality. More than a century ago, in Northern Italy’s Biella Alps, Ermenegildo Zegna commenced a reforestation project around his wool mill, throughout an area known today as Oasi Zegna. Since the Zegna founder embarked on this vast undertaking, more than 500,000 trees have been planted and nurtured in an area that stretches some 100 square kilometers. A second-floor terrace also allowed visitors to stroll around—and reflect upon—one tree at the heart of an open-air courtyard. In tandem with this, Zegna also took over custodianship (for the next three years) of the flowerbeds at Milan’s most recognizable architectural structure, Piazza Duomo, decorating the popular tourist destination with flora reminiscent of Oasi Zegna.

Inside Palazzo San Fedele, which is slated to become the new Bottega Veneta headquarters starting in September 2024, visitors could see stacks of Le Corbusier’s cabanon stools, crafted in Bottega Veneta’s signature leatherwork and designed in a special charred-wood technique that draws on traditional Japanese methods. Each piece was meticulously enveloped in Bottega Veneta’s Intreccio foulard technique, meticulously hand-woven at the House’s artisanal atelier in Montebello, near Vicenza. Saint Laurent Rive Droite’s pavilion in the cloisters of San Simpliciano was a nod to Gio Ponti’s historic modernist architecture in Caracas. Curated by creative director Anthony Vaccarello for Milan Design Week 2024, the exhibition showcased a custom tableware collection originally conceived by the Italian architect and designer in 1953 for the Venezuelan Villa Planchart, alongside a collection of archives. In collaboration with Ginori 1735, Saint Laurent reintroduced twelve original plates from the Villa Planchart Segnaposto collection. Crafted using traditional techniques and enveloped with motifs nodding to the architectural design, the decorative porcelain plates were meticulously hand-painting at Ginori 1735’s Italian factory, preserving the essence of Ponti’s visionary design.

The firms will unveil a one-off moving version of the Bocca sofa called “Gufram in Motion — La Bocca è Mobile (the mouth is mobile).” The surreal display will be set within a majestic hall of the Sala degli Specchi at Palazzo Litta situated in the 5VIE design district. The Bocca sofa was created in 1971 by Studio65 and will see its lips smooch, perhaps, for the very first time. Pierre-Louis Mascia will unveil its first home collection, which comprises a fusion of objects such as vases, plates, tablecloths and notebooks covered in silk, fabrics and prints designed for a convivial space. L’Art de la Table is the last debut and includes a series of terracotta tableware made by a Tuscan workshop and precious printed silk tablecloths.
Milan Design Week: The Highlights
Elsewhere, Dutch solar designer Marjan van Aubel proposed a future where solar energy is holistically embedded in the design process, rather than an afterthought add-on. Working with Lexus, her 8 Minutes and 20 Seconds installation took a life-size model of LF-ZC electric concept car, sliced into 11 transparent sheets, while energy was sourced from solar power captured by organic photovoltaic cells and stored in built-in batteries. The car’s color changed as the sun charged the battery, all to the natural sounds of rustling bamboo and the sun, based on sounds collected by Nasa. Elsewhere designers continued delving into the potentials of artificial intelligence in design and production.
We appreciate your interest in Denise Milano Design and look forward to the opportunity to bring your unique style to life. As lullabies began to play over the speakers, a procession of models began circulating around the room as if sleepwalking, before being dressed by two mysterious attendants in a full Browne three-piece suit and tucking themselves into bed. Expect those to become a fashion editor favorite while jetting across the Atlantic to the European shows next season.

Working with the Italian furniture maker Kartell, his A.I Lounge and A.I Console use recycled plastic for an interesting dialogue on materials and production. The Aliita Castle will land at 10 Corso Como to bring a fairytale vibe to the concept store. The installation will coincide with the drop of a new jewelry collection designed by Cynthia Vilchez Castiglioni, who launched the Aliita brand in 2015. In sync with the playful ethos of the label and the Western wave that is currently trending across fashion, music and pop culture, the range will include gold chains with enameled pendants shaped as horses, cowboy boots and hats.
I don’t know how much there is in here now, but these will be about this quantity soon,’ Bob Waardenburg, one third of the collective, tells designboom. The sculpture itself nods to another sun-inspired creation, the whimsical “Solar Do-Nothing” machine created by famed furniture maker Eames in 1957. Weekend Max Mara in collaboration with Bitossi Ceramics will present “On Slowness,” an installation inside the fashion brand’s boutique at Corso Vittorio Emanuele II 5, curated by Objects of Common Interest and the creative agency Studio Blanco. The main pieces of “On Slowness” are represented by the ceramics from the Tuscan manufacturer. These include the latest designs for the 2024 Design Week by designers Patricia Urquiola, Zaven, and Objects of Common Interest themselves.

If Milan Design Week hosted a competition for the most elegant venue, Ralph Lauren would likely take home the prize. Inspired by the Testa di Moro ceramics, la Testa di Marmi is a reinterpretation of the icon that has adorned Sicilian balconies for centuries. 001TDM is the result of Berenice Curt’s fascination with the head in all its shapes and artistic expressions, and is seen here exhibited in the Garden of Villa Borsani, Alcova. Draga & Aurel’s Parka sofa for Poltrona Frau donned a buttery, pumpkin orange leather upholstery.
During that time, she created numerous product lines, including an activity kit collection for Target, a party décor line, and a children’s board game with integrated VR technology. After recognizing a deep appreciation for beautifully designed interiors, Daphnie subsequently focused her design talent and entered the world of interior design. While at Avenue Interior Design, Daphnie has been part of the design teams heavily involved in concept development and branding and has been involved with product design and collaboration for hospitality-based suppliers, including Lily Jack, Walters Wicker, and Loloey carpets.
It’s a legacy that the founder, our great grandfather, left us for the future generations. His vision went beyond reason and as a generation we are just its custodians” stated Edoardo Zegna, chief marketing, digital and sustainability officer. Poltrona Frau collaborated with British designer Faye Toogood for the first time this year, debuting a plump, playful collection at its sprawling showroom on Via Alessandro Manzoni. Offerings include an ottoman, side table, mirror, and rug, but it’s the voluptuous armchair that has us most excited. Its rounded silhouette feels almost like a contemporary take on Frau’s iconic Vanity Fair seat—further evidence of the brand’s continued relevance, even decades later.—H.M. At Milan Design Week 2024, Samsung Design debuted its newest exhibition, Newfound Equilibrium, epitomizing its dedication to reshaping the dynamic between humans and technology.
